I swear I will get to answering comments soon, for really.

Life got weird, both health- and family-wise, and then I done gone got me a promotion. Little on the frightened side for that last one, but it starts tomorrow so I better suck it up and move on.

I swear I'm not avoiding things by watching every scrap of Olympic coverage I can find. Okay, mostly not. :)

Anyway, will respond soon.

Four more days. I can do this.

Yes, the list of "special circumstances" that I'll still handle for a while is growing, but I no longer care.

Please don't let them change it on me again? I have a status meeting tomorrow.

One more week and then I finally get to do ONLY the job I was promoted to three months ago.

Instead of both that job and my old one.

Just one more week.

I can do this.

For the love of ice cream, don't let them fuck this up and delay it any further.

Coworker: [excited] Did you see The Hunger Games?

Me: Yep.

Coworker: I don't usually watch movies in the theater, but might just for the sequel - I want to know what happens with Katniss and Peeta! Even though it doesn't really make sense that they're putting them back again.

Me: Um, have you read the books?

Coworker: There's books?

Recap of today:
Got up after not sleeping.
Woke kids for school, one of which had not set his alarm.
Worked for less than two hours.
Power went out.
Phones died.
Sat in room with locked windows with no AC or lights for five hours.
Got released to go home.
Read fic.
Made bechemal sauce for first time.
Used it for mac & cheese.
Trawled the internet for more fic.

This time it wasn't our server room on fire. The transformer for the company across the street blew, and took our power with it. They kept us there "just in case" power came back up. With no AC, no lights, no ventilation, no microwaves to heat food from the dying fridge for lunch. Yep.

And I haven't had any alcohol yet.

So this week has been interesting in the Irish sense of the word. MN remembered that it's Minne-fucking-sota and we have had freezing rain and snow storms and the people not used to it from years past tried to kill those of us who are with their cars.

Both boys also appeared to remember that they are teens with hormones and really and truly wished to express this. It did not end well for anyone involved. Currently, their grandmother has been kind enough to take them for the weekend so that infanticide is not in the cards, and [personal profile] wolfie74 has attempted to lock them out of the internet fully, thus ruining their lives.

Unfortunately, she managed to accidentally zap the access to my iPad at the same time, thus I have no internets save for logging into the server right now. That's not all bad as I have gotten a crap ton of writing done, but it is a bit of a pain when I need to look something up (say, travel times via car via the QE from Two Harbors to Manhattan and/or traffic patterns in Avengers City Manhattan) and have to try to get into a server I barely have logged into in recent history.

From a writing perspective, Purple Converse is probably about 80% complete at 25,000 words, and Breathing Exercises is about 85% or so at 3,500 words. So, you know, progress?

For now, though, I need to actually get going for the day and possibly find a supply of cheap rubber ducks in MN for work because, really, if you are going to take a joke, you take it all the way.

Dear whoever it was at work that thought they would check out my iPad while I was away from my desk:

- It was in my locker for a reason.

- That reason was not for you to dig in there and look for it.

- I do not usually lock my locker while at work what with us being in a secured area of a secured building and me usually being at my desk.

- Said secure area has cameras everywhere.

- My iPad searches for wi-fi every time I open Safari. It will stack the notices if opened more than once.

- There were three notices.

- My iPad was falling out of my bag, which was moved.

- My purse was not touched.

- My family pictures were.

- This is after my Egyptian prayer sheet was thrown away last week, leaving a small square free of dust in its place.

- What gives you this right?

- I mean other than being an ass?

- Kinda wish I had something more interesting than a PG-13 Avengers pulled up.

- I need a new job.

- In the interim, we are watching old Doctor Who eps whilst waiting for the new ep of Alphas. We each have our own ways of dealing with things, Sci-Fi is mine.

Realized I had not posted anything that was not a whine or something completely random for quite some time. Sorry. Wrote this explanation-type thing, but deleted it because, really I don't want to read/write about this crap, so I doubt anyone else does.

Suffice to say, work = stress right now. Thought I had maxed out on that, but am pleased to announce that it is apparently possible to go above and beyond and reach whole new levels if the universe really wants you to.

I have poked at a few stories, but haven't made much real progress as of late. Instead, I am spending my lunches at work escaping by reading fic on my iPad, taking quiet glee in reading stuff that would make most of my bosses and coworkers squirm, right under their noses. Maybe when the stress dies down a little? Like when when the thing that was supposed to happen in March to reduce our workload by half finally happens? Or is that just crazy talk?

Well then, that's that, there's an update. Back to watching one of the most horrifically edited versions of X-Men I have ever seen in my life. Or possibly just mindlessly poking through Tumblr for a while.

Oh, though if anyone has any suggestions for fic I can read in an hour or less that won't make me gouge out my eyes, let me know? Rating is not an issue, though I do prefer plot and characterization over just about anything else, including porn.

Apologies in advance for the snarky/bitchy/whiney posts and/or tweets that may occur this week. Huge changes of the sucky kind are hitting at work, as well as boss's boss's boss coming for a visit, as well as many other fun and/or exciting (less the fun and exciting) happenstances all hitting at once.

On the up side, at least I have a job to bitch about?

The new little header thing on LJ that's trying ever so hard to imitate the little header thing on DW is telling me I have 415 messages in my In Box. Er, yeah... I need to get to those.

Some of them I have already replied to but forgot to delete, and some are PMs that I did not know I had so, um, sorry for some very late replies that may or may not be starting shortly.

In other news, work sucks (slightly more than usual), writer's block is attempting to hit while I have two entries due and really wanted to work on a third, and my new glasses need to be adjusted because those little nose piece thingies just plain hurt right now. [Typing this without glasses, so sorry for random typos.]

In other, other news, Spring has sprung in MN where we had a 90 degree day yesterday that was all the more surprising for having snow last week. Currently have the windows open and the fans on, but are not watching the idiot students across the street climb their roof in a rain storm (that was last night and they do so hate to be repetitive).

Running away to see if I can get anything productive done writing-wise tonight. Cheers.

Apologies, again, some more, for another time, for being behind in responding to comments. I was going to catch up, and then RL attacked.

Last week was spent being swamped at work and perhaps going a bit insane between that, a charity drive [livejournal.com profile] drag_on_king and I were heading up, random meetings and more. Made some progress on the [livejournal.com profile] fringeminibang fic, only to get jossed with the season finale (er, it's AU, yeah, that's it!), and poked at a fic for [livejournal.com profile] gwaine_quest with a stick.

Yesterday was spent helping [livejournal.com profile] drag_on_king move and watching Eldest get fawned over for being such a big help (and for his height and reaching tall things, but mostly for the help). We relaxed after by catching up on Doctor Who and forming all sorts of theories as to something that would be a spoiler if you did not watch the episodes.

Today we beyond slept in and relaxed for the most part. [personal profile] wolfie74 gave me a plaque for Mother's Day that inspired the icon above and made me giggle a lot. Youngest gave me a fabric flower he got while with his grandmother, and Eldest gave me a shy kiss to the head (did I mention he's tall now?) and a grumbled, "Happy Mom's Day, Amma." Aw, tweens...

All in all, a rather nice weekend. Currently curled up with a laptop and kitties and totally about to work on stories and not play online, I swear. Maybe.

It’s Friday! And Earth Day! And I did not hit a duck on the way in to work this morning!

[Background story:
About four years ago now (we were at the old office), I was driving to work and, on a particular curve, a duck came out of nowhere, he bounced off my windshield, and then flew on. Yes. I looked behind me but could not see him and I think only really his foot hit but still, I hit a duck on Earth Day. Several of my coworkers have not let me live this down.]

In keeping with tradition though, the Explorer before me had an Oriel bounce off of his luggage rack on the exit ramp this morning so, really, no worries, everything is fine.

So now, it’s time to start my crap ton of work if/when the system lets me in, and contemplate writing inappropriate Gwaine fic. *eyes follow up list* Maybe.
cat_77: Fozzy WTF (Wocka Whut?)
Wednesday, June 30th, 2010 01:55 pm
So, at work and so totally concentrating on my very few remaining follow ups, I went digging through some old folders on my computer that were happily brought along from my old one and stored in a file in a file in a file never to be seen again. One such file is marked Cat – Personal, so I look and find a crap ton of old stories I must have worked on here at one time. Some are from 2004 people.

So I did what any normal person would do and started clicking randomly to see what’s what. I found a couple I had already posted, but found a SG-1 story from January 2007, another from 2008, ten pages of a SGA kid fic from 2008, and some of my original notes from my K-series stuff from 2004 - including the names and such I went looking for two years ago, could not find, said screw it, and reinvented from scratch.

Things I have learned:
1) I should probably clean these things out more often.

2) I have a bad habit of writing pages upon pages of fic, and then moving on to something new (I’m looking at you, you 50 pages of “Days of Forever”).

3) I have worked for the same company for far too long.

4) They, like, totally don’t look at what’s on our personal drives in ancient folders, do they?

5) I may, possibly, have the attention span of a gnat today.

Sending the kid fic one home to possibly poke at while on the trip because it amuses: I downsized McKay, Sheppard, and Kavanaugh. Might send one of the SG-1 ones home as well because I have a crap-ton of notes on Anat for an Anat and Ba’al loose on Earth fic.

Friday, April 23rd, 2010 10:43 am
Watched In Plain Sight this week, which managed to have not one but two awesome quotes:
- “What are you, verbally impotent?” “I’m sorry, it’s never happened before.”
- “It’s like salmon – they swim upstream, fight the tide, and end up on a bagel.”

Watched Bones last night. Spoiler for Cause of Death )

Watched Fringe last night as well. Okay ep, it was about time, want to know who the person at the end was. However, the preview for next week looks awesome. Spoiler for Upcoming Ep(s) )

Now I must totally concentrate on my work and in no way try to pull up Word and write fanfic. It helps that boss’s boss’s boss is moving in to the cube next to me effective next week and they are currently rebuilding it for her. It’s like a neat little noose hanging over my head. Or, possibly, just to be contrary, I want to goof off that much more while I can...

Learned a coworker of mine went to the same high school as me. She’s much younger than I am, but apparently we shared some of the same teachers. My truly excellent yet you still did not want to be left alone with him in the dark room art teacher just recently retired and she credits him with encouraging her art (which rocks, BTW).

She also told me she had the same English teachers as I did. One of these teachers was a student teacher who had just been hired on full time when I was there. Loved him. Totally credit him with encouraging both my sci-fi love and to try my hand at writing. He was a dork, but so excited about everything and accepted what amounted to my first fanfic piece as a submission for a project (based in the Highlander universe, but with an original character or three). It had typos and punctuation issues (give me credit, it was 1995 and I had rarely typed anything without my mother taking it away from me and doing it herself) and he adored it anyway and asked for a copy and told me he’d love to see me published some day.

I’m fairly certain a fanfic writer on the internet is not what he meant, but I am still working on my original series and have faint hopes of submitting it someday, eventually, quite possibly years from now. Anyway, to Mr. Voss – you rock and I thank you.

New Fringe is on tonight! I do believe a long day just got better!

Eventually, some day, long from now, I will find a Fringe comm that shares my enthusiasm and doesn't harsh the buzz by pointing out the pseudo-science fallacies or ruin it by pairing everyone up.

PS - My coworkers are currently making a broken desk squeek and making... interesting... suggestions as to how it got broken. Hee!

I would like to present to you the concept of a "Ghetto Mocha". Take one packet instant hot chocolate (Swiss Miss Double Dark works well), combine with one half to one whole Taster's Choice instant coffee individual serving packet depending upon need. Add water, nuke in the microwave until warm, stir and chug.

Why yes, both [livejournal.com profile] drag_on_king and I *were* that desperate for caffeine, why do you ask?

My boss and her boss are currently having an in depth discussion about "24". It's kind of awesome as they are talking about characterization and feasibility and whether it would fit a real life model. They are also talking about what they would have done differently.

They are discussing everything with a seriousness I have only seen in fandom. This amuses me to no end. If they start plotting out their own storylines, I might just die of glee.

No, I don't watch 24, but the fact they are so into a show *cough*like me*cough* just makes me giggle.

- Was told today at 4:30 that I will be moving desks first thing tomorrow morning. We knew it was coming, but why they kept it a secret until the last moment? Who knows? At least I was still there when the email came through at 4:32, unlike the people who leave at 4:00 and 4:30. :)

- You really should not wear crop pants with calf-high or knee-high boots unless you secretly have some Oliver Twist fetish that you just cannot contain anymore.

- Love that the schools call and leave an automated message with which periods kids were absent. Our end of the conversation went, "You were absent first period?" "Er, no?" "Were you tardy?" "It wasn't my fault! The bus was late and I only had two minutes and had to get to the third floor and my locker..." Fold like cards, baby. *g*

- Got an odd idea for a potential Merlin/Highlander fic. Don't ask.

- You know it's cold when the gas station turns off the option for buying a car wash. [Yes, it would be stupid to get one in this weather, but still amusing.]

- And to end things on a positive note: Moving desks means moving away from Hacky McWheezy and the Perfume Squad! True it also means that I will likely have none of the programs I need because they will be "upgrading" my computer at the same time, but they are also putting me within throwing distance (literally) of [livejournal.com profile] drag_on_king. Things could get interesting. They were when management was foolish enough to do the same thing something like 7 or 8 years ago. *g*
