I live in the state of Minnesota, which is known for its excellence in education (or at least used to be, I don't know the current rankings). We just got a notice from the Minnesota Department of Education listing our eldest son's scores and rankings on the national English Language Learner's version of the required tests. Basically, it's the same type of tests as everyone else, but with simplified language requirements and simplified phrasing for the Math and Science sections and the like created for people who have English as a second language.
We found this amazing as he only speaks English and is learning a smattering of Japanese.
Yes, he has a Hispanic name. No, he does not speak Spanish. Surprisingly, like many other children in this day and age, he was born and raised here in the US learning the 'official' US language of English.
Way to racially profile based on names, people.
On the up side, his scores far exceeded the state and national averages.
