Random BS

Random BS the First:
A school district short on money (enough so that they are closing two schools) is spending thousands to fight against the right for a GLBT group to have equal status in their school. Yeah... that makes sense. *shakes head*

Random BS the Second:
My Docs are missing. I am not pleased. [No, not equal to the above, but did make me start the day in a less than pleasant mood that I should be taking out on my coworkers shortly.]

Remember, public school funding comes in all sorts of forms. Capital funding is what they'd need to maintain the schools, as well as funds for personnel (different pocket), and all the rest. Legal funds would come out of another pocket altogether.

Plus, one of the major reasons school districts are short on funds is when tax revenues drop. One of the reasons tax revenues drop is that people have moved away from the area.

We've seen that just within HISD. The choice was to do massive repairs/upgrades to a couple of high schools with low attendance because families were leaving that part of town or to consolidate the students in that area into one school that would be repaired/upgraded and build a new one in a part of town where the school aged population was booming.

Then there's the direct practical answer: Thousands of dollars might win a legal battle, but running a school building for a year costs millions.

I can see that side of things, but I also still feel the need to question the continuation of the fight. A judge already ruled that yes, it's okay for them to be counted as a curricular activity and have access to the bulletin boards and such. The district has decided to fight this ruling, even as they lay off 200 people and close two schools due to budget issues. The school asmits they have spent "hundreds of thousands of dollars" on this. That money could have gone elsewhere (if they redirected funds). It just seems like not the best use of the district's time or money at this point.

OH! The district is fighting *against* the ruling? (I couldn't pull up the link - my connection kept timing out.)

Ok, that's stupid. :-) From your original post, I thought they were fighting to *get* a ruling to allow it.

Added a word (against) to the original post to hopefully clarify, sorry 'bout that.

Yeah, they are fighting against a student group's right to put postings on a bulletin board and possibly use the PA system for announcements like other student groups. It just seems... well, "stupid" really sums it up, doesn't it?

Very stupid. Spending the money to fight injustice is one thing. Spending it to *force* injustice is something else.

sorry carided
