Fic - Mother Doesn't Always Know Best
Let me preface this with the knowledge that we watched a couple Sanctuary episodes this weekend to catch up on the backlog. This has been in my head ever since. Yes, I know I should be writing my NaNoWriMo story, and I totally will work on it at lunch. This, er, was not written at lunch. *g*

Ashley tried to resist the urge to pause and listen outside of Henry’s door, but only a little. She just wanted to confirm her findings, such as they were, that was all. At least that was her story and she was sticking to it.
Unfortunately, she happened to pause just as her mother came around the corner of the corridor. “Problem, dear?” her mother asked, polite as always.
She shook her head and tried not to blush. “No, not at all mom,” she insisted. “Just thought I heard something, that’s all.”
That something suddenly became rather quiet, save for Will’s hushed voice uttering, “Crap!”
“Was that Will?” Helen asked, head cocked to the side.
Ashley knew she was blushing now as she attempted to cover for the slip. “I’m sure you misheard,” she tried. “I can’t think of any reason for Will to be in Henry’s room on his night off. I’m sure he has better things to do, er, I mean better plans, what with it being Friday night and all.”
Helen had the professor look in her eyes, never a good sign. “Now Ashley, it’s about time you knew,” she began, and Ashley tried not to groan. “It is perfectly normal for two adult, sexually active males to spend time together in an intimate manner. It is a phenomenon known as ‘homosexuality’ and it is actually quite common.”
She waved her hands to try to get her mother to stop. “I know what gay is mom, that’s okay.”
“Now I want you to be supportive,” her mother continued, nonplussed. “It can be extremely difficult for one to come to this realization about themselves, much like an Abnormal coming to terms with their abilities. Not that homosexuality is an abnormality, far from it. In fact, there is evidence that our predecessors on the evolutionary ladder practiced same-sex relationships.”
“Mom,” she tried, again, to cut her off. “It’s okay. I totally get the whole gay thing. Really. And supportive? I’m totally there. You have no problem with that.”
“Well, if you need further reference, I do have several books on the subject,” Helen offered.
Ashley kind of wished the floor would open up and swallow her whole. It was possible; she had seen the diagrams of temporal-spatial portals before. “Sure thing, mom,” she agreed, hoping that would put a stop to things.
It seemed to do the trick as her mother finally continued on her way, humming and muttering something about providing research materials to the boys if need be. Once she turned the next corner, Ashley thudded her head against the wall and let out a breath.
The door to Henry’s room hesitantly opened, a shirtless Will peeking out into the hallway. She no longer considered the entire experience a total loss.
“I’m so sorry,” he started. His blush rivaled what she knew her own to be at this point, flushing all the way down to parts she really should not be looking at right now.
“It’s okay,” she insisted.
He bit his lip, glancing back into the room behind him. “I can explain,” he stuttered, hand waving to end up running through his already thoroughly mussed hair.
“Please don’t,” she begged. “I believe my mother more than handled any explanations I may need.”
The blush deepened. “Er, I...” he trailed off, having no response to that.
“Don’t worry,” she consoled, pushing herself up off the wall to walk away. “It wasn’t nearly as bad as the time she explained the female orgasm.”
She was nearly around the corner when she heard the door shut and the laughter begin.
