Grr... Argh...

Very tired this morning and I really do not think it's the culmination of a month's lack of sleep at this point, but rather the fucking cats. I love them, really I do, but if they do not shut up I will be forced to beat them.

We got a rosemary plant shaped like a Christmas tree as a present this weekend and placed it on a shelf in the bathroom as it is the only place in the house we can be reasonably sure the cats won't get to. Ever since we got it, they keep trying to sneak into the bathroom. They have yet to climb the shelf, but we do not doubt their determination.

Last night, we closed the door to lock them out while we slept. They scratched at it, they pawed at it and they yowled at it all night long. They are obsessed with it enough that you would think it's the prettiest, most awesomest, sparkliest rosemary plant in the whole wide world. Seriously, I'm thinking of calling it "Bella" at this point.

We may have to give it away. It smells wonderful, but damn, it's not worth this hassle.

How about trying supervised visitation? Put the plant on the floor of the living and let the cats see and sniff it with you there to stop them from eating it. Maybe it's partly the plant and partly the lure of the forbidden which is exciting them. Maybe once they've had a chance to get up close and personal they'll get it out of their system and leave the plant alone.

I do a version of this with the Christmas tree where I put the tree up and leave it all naked and un-decorated for about 24 hours so if the kitties DO wreak havoc, it's of little consequence.

(of course the REAL trick is keeping them off of the decorations, lights, and garland)

Our cats would go after it thinking "Look! Free food!" The two that were after it the most are... not so bright, with the third being the kitten and the fourth beating them all up based on principle. *g* My guess is the rosemary is in the mint family, along with catnip, and their little brains are looking to get high.

Our youngest cat discovered the Christmas tree the first year, and fell in love. Pretty much from the time we put it up 'til the time we take it down, you just walk by and pull her out of it. It is rather cute when she falls asleep wrapped around one of the upper layers though.
