Story: Evolution

Category: Double Drabble (200 words)
Synopsis: It started, as with most children, with hot chocolate.
Warnings: None
It started, as with most children, with hot chocolate. Instant at first, gradually graduating to the finer quality, handmade concoctions. Taste was everything, the smooth richness of the good stuff more worth far more than the three dollars per cup.
Then one day, a touch of coffee was added. Not bad, but the pure chocolate was still better. Things got rough. It was a long day promising to be an even longer night and the caffeine was both a gift and a necessity. Soon it became a regular thing, especially whenever that extra push was needed.
Then the war came. Restful nights decreased, antacid consumption increased, and chocolate became nearly non-existent. The wakefulness came at the cost of taste. Soon even the most bitter brew was accepted if it meant being able to focus that one extra minute to finish the task and maybe save the day. There were times when the thought of a few instant crystals suspended in lukewarm water was a boon.
Then the war was over. People began drifting their separate ways until only the team, only family remained. A steaming cup of hot chocolate sitting waiting on a mess-strewn desk said only one thing.
Home.
