Merlin - Fluff

Another comment fic for [info - community] camelot_fleet, cleaned up a bit to post here. Original entry is here.

Title: Fluff
Genre: Het (I know, I’m scared too), Merlin/Freya
Length: ~ 800 words
Rating: PG
Season/Spoilers: 2.09
Synopsis: AU set some time after 2.09 where people get their happy(-ish) ending.
Author’s Notes: Fluff, as in pure and utter fluff, with possibly a tiny hint of crack. I’d blame [livejournal.com profile] briar_pipe, but she would probably just laugh at me. *g*
Disclaimer: I do not own this particular interpretation of the myths and am making no profit.

Merlin came stumbling through the door at top speed, nearly tripping over his feet twice before skidding to a stop outside the bedroom door. “Well?” he asked. “Are you going to tell me?”

Arthur put an arm around his shoulder and offered, “These things take time, you know. It’s not like ‘bam’ and it’s done. One must have patience, Merlin.”

“But, the screaming is done,” Merlin tried. “That’s a good thing, right? No more screaming and hollering and cursing my name? Er, hopefully only figuratively on that last one. Unless... Oh, no! Unless something happened and...”

“Merlin!” Arthur shouted, trying to get him to focus once more. “It’s fine. She’s fine. They’re fine. Everyone is fine,” he insisted.

Merlin narrowed his eyes at him. “Then why won’t you let me in?” he asked reasonably.

The door opened to reveal a slightly harried but also slightly amused Morgana. “Because he is being that word you so love, ‘prat’ is it?”

He peered around her to where Gaius was tucking a blanket around Freya and Gwen was cooing over something in a basket at the side of the bed. “Is it? Are they? Am I?” he started and stalled on so many of the questions he wanted to ask, not sure which one he wanted an answer to first.

“Congratulations,” Gwen offered. “You’re a father!”

She stepped back to reveal a basket with three tiny mewling kittens, fur as dark as their little wings that had yet to unfurl. Their eyes were still sealed shut and they were pawing and batting at each other, stumbling over one another and getting wrapped in the soft blanket lining their bed.

It was then he noticed the late hour, the clock having struck midnight some time during Freya promising to make sure he paid for what he had done to her. Her voice had turned to a roar, but she had not transformed since her first trimester, so he was fairly certain she was still human at the time.

He sat down, completely missing the chair and landing on the large cushion next to the bed where Freya preferred to lay until morning. “I’m a father...” he said in wonder. It did not matter that he was a father to a litter of little bat kittens that may or may not turn human come sunrise. For now, he looked in awe at the tiny little lives he had helped create, watched as they all crowded to the same side of the basket, nipping at the fingers he dangled there.

“Yes, you are,” a new voice agreed. He turned to see Freya watching with tired eyes from the bed, looking as beautiful as he had ever seen her.

“And you, you’re a mum!” he told her proudly, earning a bright grin. She freed her hand from the mass of blankets piled around her and let it rest on his shoulder, offering a light squeeze.

“And the kingdom is cursed if your children turn out as incompetent as you,” Arthur muttered as he wandered fully into the room. He looked down at the basket in surprise. “Three of them? We are surely doomed!”

“Arthur!” Morgana chided, smacking him soundly on the arm. “Be kind!” she warned.

She needn’t have as he was already crouched beside the basket, offering his own fingers to give Merlin’s a break. “They’re actually rather cute, in a furry, demonic way,” he smiled.

Merlin laughed, revelling in the feeling of love and support filling the tiny room of their cottage on the lake’s shore. He was surrounded by friends and family and everyone was alive and well and thriving; he could not ask for anything more.

As the sun began to rise and one by one the little winged kittens turned into little mewling babies, he realized there was possibly one thing he may need: a nanny. Two little girls and one little boy, all with black hair and startling blue eyes all staring back at him with nearly as much wonder as he was watching them with. There was a new cooing noise as well, but he was fairly certain that was coming from Morgana as he also heard discussions of bows and dresses and all sorts of truly frightening things.

Gwen was readying three tiny bottles of warmed goat’s milk, but was apparently not quite fast enough for his kin. The little boy’s eyes glowed gold and the bottle floated through the air to land with a crash in the makeshift crib.

“Definitely your son,” Arthur huffed, righting the bottle and offering it to the eager little mouth.

Merlin could not help but smile as he reached for Freya’s hand and held on tight. They were definitely his alright, and he could not believe the good fortune destiny had seen fit to grant him with.

Freya died, what? Because this is totally what happened!

This was so cute, and I love the little details, like Freya's screams turning to roars at midnight. :) And the image of sweet, innocent Freya screaming curses on Merlin's name is just ... YEAH. I liked it soso much and definitely cheered me up after being super-saddened by Merlin Once Again Crying Over A Death.

Hee! Thank you! There was a whole thread over at camelot_fleet about the need for an AU with tiny furry babies to cheer everyone up, and this was my take on it. So happy you enjoyed!

I don't know why I was surprised at the furry babies. *g* But it was a nice surprise. Aaaaa fluff, I so needed you. This is so, so nice. *rolls around the floor with fic like a cat with catnip* (and Merlin not caring what form his babies are in, lol!)

(as long as my OT4 is there somewhere, I'm happy *g*)

Hee! After all the crack fic you've read, it's the furry babies that did it - awesome!

Love the OT4, but also love the friendship aspect of if. I'd like to think of a happier future (at least versus what canon's going to give us) in which all four are together in some way, even if it's friendship and nothing more.

Thanks!

This is hopelessly adorable. Also, the image of Merlin as overwhelmed father, trying to keep up with three toddlers, amuses me. I'm picturing him up at 2am trying to convince a winged kitten to come down from the rafters of the great hall.

Heh, thanks!

"Come on, sweetie, come on down... Daddy's got a nice little piece of lamb for you... No! Don't magic it up to yourself! Freya, she's doing it again!"

Awwww. This was perfectly adorable. I love how everyone is supportive and helping in small and bigger ways while talking - no character is forgotten, and Merlin's wonder. My heart, it melted. <3<3

Aw, thank you so much!
