Head Desk of Epic Proportions
So we have a woman here at work who is, perhaps, not the most computer literate person in the world. Yes, she has other issues,
We also have an archaic system that we use for most everything that has tons of little glitches. Do you see a problem here?
So, occasionally, when you try to print things lock up like there’s no tomorrow and the only way to unlock them is to restart. It’s happened to me, it’s happened to at least half a dozen other coworkers I can name off the top of my head. It's annoying, but you deal with it. It happened to her today.
About a half hour into the lock up, another coworker and myself tried to explain that she needed to reboot or else it would tie up the printer for everyone else as well as her own system. She nodded, then fretted that she would lose other things she was working on. She was still able to save, so we told her to save everything and reboot.
Another half hour later, she had still not rebooted.
Finally, she called tech support, and told them that she had tried rebooting and nothing happened. Tech support likes to remind us that they can see the last time we rebooted, so don’t lie.
About five minutes into the phone call came the awesome. This is what we heard, which accounts only for what she said and not their discussion:
“Okay, I’m looking at the box... The button? Okay, I’m pressing the button! Oh my god! My screen just went blank! Is it supposed to do that?!?”
The printer is now clear. Apparently, logging off is not the same as rebooting. Who knew? Well, you know, other than the rest of the department, that is. It truly scares me to think of the state of that hard drive right now.
