Bad Idea, Again

Beginning of a bad idea that I kinda sorta want to give in to (aka What I Did During the Last 15-20 Minutes of Work Today):

“I believe this is the work of magic,” Gaius intoned solemnly. He hung his head, waiting for his king’s rage, for his orders to burn the town and salt the earth upon which it stood.

Instead Uther gave him a look that he usually reserved for Merlin and replied, “Well, obviously. The question is, can you reverse it?”

Gaius blinked, trying to regain his own composure. “I will do my best, sire,” he promised. He looked to the task at hand and warned, “It may take some time, though.”

“How long?” Uther demanded.

“I simply do not know,” Gaius admitted. He barely knew where to begin to research, let alone how to seek a cure.

Uther was, understandably, upset. He began to pace, and when he spoke Gaius was not certain if he was being addressed, or the world at large. “Why would anyone do something like this? It simply makes no sense. If it is a curse, it is truly an absurd one. Why not simply kill them outright instead of this... insanity?”

The insanity in question chose that moment to crawl over to him and tug on his trouser leg. “Papa?”

Uther scooped up the little blond baby with barely a hint of hesitation, cradling him close and calmly pulling the chubby little hands away from sword and dirk. “No, Arthur, dangerous,” he told the child. Arthur pulled at the hilt once more and once more his hand was taken away, this time redirected to one of Gaius’ favorite quills. As if that was a reminder as to the other man’s presence, Uther looked to him again in question.

Gaius had many theories about what happened, and why, but felt there was one that stood out above all else. “I believe it may be a challenge to the throne, sire.” He waited for Uther’s doubting response and was not disappointed when he received it. He held up a hand, one of the rare times he dared, and explained, “Arthur was in the prime of his life and ready to face any challenge to himself, to the crown, and to Camelot itself. Now it may be years before he is even able to hold a sword again and you are getting on in years yourself. Perhaps this attack was to insure there was no one to take your place or, perhaps to create a puppet king out of young Arthur should you inevitably fall in battle.”

~~~~~~~~~~
Yeah, there's more. And it involves more Little Arthur and perhaps Merlin accidentally being left behind in the woods when this happened (*cough*to be raised by animals for a bit*cough*) and Morgana and Gwen being changed as well.
Don't stop! Please? This part is adorable/scary. But I can see where it can go in so many different directions.
Do hope to see more.
I kinda sorta worked on this one instead of my finish-a-thon fic tonight, and am now about 1500 words into it. It might turn into a series of short stories instead of one long one though the way I'm thinking of setting it up.
Thanks though!
A series of stories is always a good way to go. I'm thinking of doing that with a WIP I have in the works. Split the thing up so I'll feel better not posting on it constantly.
Merlin may or may not have been accidentally left behind by the knights in their haste to get Arthur and Morgana and Gwen back to the castle in their new childish forms. He also may or may not have used his innate magic to influence a wild boar to protect him. This protection may or may not have led to the sheepish knights sent back out to find him discovering him growling and snapping at them like his protective surrogate mama.
This all may or may not have to do with the image of a tiny little 1-2 year old Merlin, covered in mud, on all fours, growling at the big bad knights that have *no* idea what to do with him.
Er, maybe. *wince*
There's a section in between the above and this, but...
He turned to leave again and Gaius pressed his luck once more. “Sire, what of Merlin?”
At that Uther did look around. “Where is the boy? Was he changed as well?”
Gaius had no idea if Merlin was changed or not, just as he did not know if he played a role in all of this and, more importantly, just where he currently was. “Your men did not return with him.”
Uther turned to the nearest knight and demanded, “My son, my ward, and their servants left together. There were four of them. Why did you think to only return three?”
It was Leon who was bold enough to answer. He stepped forward and offered, “We thought it best to return the prince and you ward to the safety of the castle, especially in light of their new conditions.”
Gaius turned on him before Uther had the chance to. “Did you even bother to look for him? Changed or not, you left him alone in a forest with a known sorcerer. At best, he is his usual self and left at their mercy. At worst he is as young as the others and completely defenseless!” He thought of Merlin, full-sized, fighting off the sorcerer, unleashing his own magic only to be left injured or dying with no one to help, no one to bring him home. His mind then drifted to the child he had known nearly two decades ago, barely toddling about, skinny as all get out, and surrounded by all the dangers the forest had to offer.
Uther sighed and Gaius honestly could not tell if he was about to defend his knights’ actions, or agree with him. The decision was apparently made for him though when Arthur pulled himself back into a standing position with the help of his father’s boot and pointed to the window set high in the wall above his head. “Merlin!” he declared, as clear as day. At the questioning looks he received, he pinched his lips together in an expression eerily reminiscent of his older self. “Want Merlin!” he shouted. He pointed again to the window and even stomped his foot. “Want Merlin now!”
Gaius crouched down to his level, silently cursing his aging joints for popping with the action. “Arthur?” he asked, drawing the child’s attention to him. “Did you see Merlin?”
The little blond head nodded vigorously. “Merlin,” he repeated.
Figuring it was worth the try, he asked, “Was Merlin small like you, or big like Leon over there?” He did not dare ask the child to compare Merlin to himself, knowing the age difference would confuse him.
Arthur seemed to think about it for a moment before he said, “Merlin big.” Gaius heaved a sigh of relief. Right up until the boy added, “Big like me.”
Uther cursed and all three knights paled. “Find him!” he ordered.
BIG LIKE ME!
Ahahaha! Oh, wee!Arthur, you are just sooo cute. Between you and Merlin, and the adorableness that is sure to be Gwen and Morgana... I might just expire from glee when reading this.
I somehow love the image of a cursing Uther too.
*GGG*
Arthur is great fun to write. I'm rather hoping they all will be.
Currently, the trio is asleep in the nursery surrounded by nurses and guards, and Merlin... is asleep in the woods surrounded by extremely protective wild boars. *wince*
