Yuletide! (A Letter)
Okay, so this is the first time I have tried this, so I apologize profusely if I screw it up.
Totally and completely in advance, I want to thank anyone and everyone who volunteers or offers their services for this awesome fest. If you happen to be someone who happens to like what I like, well, even more thanks to be heaped upon you. :)
I am pretty easy going in this to tell the truth, or at least I hope so. I’m just going to list out the three fandoms I chose and kind of what I like best about them and/or kind of what I would love in fic about them.
Old Kingdom – by Garth Nix (aka The Abhorsen Series)
I happened across the first book in the library and ate my way through the rest of them in a very short time. Adored them, completely and truly.
My favorite parts were the strong female leads that weren’t perfect, were in over their heads and not quite pleased about it, and the way they just kind of hoped what they were doing would work out in the end. I also loved the threads of humor that wove through even the tensest of scenes. Lirael not wanting to know what her socks were like after two days in a marsh, Sabriel musing that it was fine to stare upon the lifelike “statue” that turned out to be Touchstone because she was forced to go to an all girls school so it was only fair, Mogget holding the little bell so it wouldn’t put him to sleep as he trudged on to try to save the day – all of these drew you into the story even more.
In a 100% truth and honesty, the goings on of Ancelstierre bored me a bit, though how the people of Ancelstierre saw or rationalized the magic when tossed into it was far more interesting. I much preferred the time in the Old Kingdom itself with the bloodlines and families and the battles they waged and how they did so, and the time spent in Death and its effects on people.
Would love anything focused on Sabriel or Lirael the most, but also how they interact with everyone else or even how they are seen by the members of their own “families” would be more than fine as well.
Alphas
Rather adored this series, really. I will come right out and say my favorite character of them all is Gary. Love him. Love how he sees the world and his brutal honesty and his sense of humor or at least his attempt at having a sense of humor. I like how he sees the world – not just the energy signals portion of it, but how he sees people and interacts with them.
I also really liked Skylar and would love to see more about her and her child and how they get on and/or if she keeps in touch with the others. The possibility of a second generation and what they may be able to do is also really kind of interesting.
Have to say that I really am not a fan of the Nina/Cameron romance. Like them individually, and like them working together and being friends, but not much more. I have always been more about teams and teamwork in every fandom I like though, so that could be playing a role. Actually, how this team works together could be cool to explore – they really did not work at all at first, and then they started to both trust each other and figure out each others’ strengths and how to use them or at least deal with them.
Hercules: The Legendary Journeys
I feel almost silly asking for this, but figure what the hell?
Hercules was one of my very first fandoms. I tended to have Herc and Iolaus run into Xena and Gabrielle a lot because, well, it was fun. Actually, Herc and Iolaus having to interact with Ares and Aphrodite was a lot of fun as well. Actually, Herc and Iolaus having to interact with each other and/or the baddy of the week was fun.
Yes, the show was pure camp, but sometimes you *wanted* camp. It was escapism and storytelling and humor and yeah... It came on pretty much my senior year of high school and was a go-to show after a bad week of class and exams in college. It wasn’t deep, lets be honest here, but it always brought a smile to your face (so long as you ignored the worst of the Dahak arc).
Oh, and I am in complete denial that Iolaus ever died and that he was ever replaced by the wishy-washy annoying version of himself from the Alt Universe. Didn’t happen, sorry (see above about ignoring Dahak).
There were a couple of other fandoms I almost requested, but decided on these three instead, if anyone is so willing to give them a try. Please don’t think these are my die-hard views of any of this (well, save for the Dahak thing and the Nina/Hicks thing). I’m pretty easy going, I swear.
I will say that I do have three things I have issues with in any fandom, in case they are something that happens to come up:
- Character Death – I just can’t do it
- Permanent Disability/Dismemberment – again, can’t do it
- Purposeful Embarrassment/Humiliation – total squick of mine, I have no idea why but I can’t stand reading/seeing someone forced to go through something I myself would be embarrassed about – it makes me squirm uncomfortably
Hopefully this does not come across as too demanding (given up on not coming across as too wordy – sorry!). If you are not sure about something, give it a try. Pretty much anything is love, for realz.
