Cool Stuff, Really It Is!

This is kinda cool. They figured out that about 2/3rds of the old "remedies" prescribed in Ancient Egypt actually have the potential to work by studying the ingredients, methods of extraction, dosing and such.

Hey, [livejournal.com profile] threnodyjones, maybe you should try some of this? Well, you know, if someone was awesome enough to put it all in a book or something...

On a completely unrelated note, I think I want this No, thinking about it, I really do. For the comment about unicorn blood alone...

Great article on Egyptian medicine. I like how they rule out the impotence medicine just because none of the individual ingredients work on their own. Maybe, just maybe, they work together or maybe not but I dislike it when things are categorically denied without real study.

We actually did a study in one of my science classes on this - either the reaction (as in chemical) between the individual ingredients might change the structure of the thing itself, or simply each one acting on it's own produces a tiny amount of progress and working together there is now a noticable difference.

Still would love a translated book on this. The closest I have is the "Greek Magical Papyri in Translation" - some spells, some recipes, but none proven and most are "the most likely" ingredients when the original is unclear.

It would be a great book to have indeed.
