Sheppard happened upon her by pure chance. He was simply going to the infirmary to acquire some aspirin, or possibly Tylenol, after a strenuous bout of getting his ass kicked by Ronon, that’s all. The fact is was near one in the morning and pretty much no one would be around to see him make his request was beside the point. Instead of painkillers, he found Doctor Keller... crying.

He was never quite sure to handle these situations, but knew he had to say something when he stumbled backwards over an errant stool and made rather loud crashing noise against a bedside table. She looked over to him, blinking her eyes quickly and sniffing. She ran her hand under her nose and he swore he could see the slight gleam of snot across it before she wiped it on her pants and asked, “Colonel?”

“Hiya, Doc,” he greeted her, trying for cool and unconcerned in hopes she would let him slink away. She sniffed again and his conscience got the better of him, forcing him to ask, “What’s wrong?”

“It’s nothing,” she rushed to assure him. He breathed a silent sigh of relief, having apparently missed the bullet. That was, until she added, “Well, I guess not nothing, obviously, but it’s nothing that I can do anything about right now.”

He put on his best concerned face and asked, “What do you mean?” wincing inwardly as he realized he just opened the door to a potential full heart-to-heart.

She looked like she was about to sniff again, and he reached for a tissue before she used the back of her hand, offering it to her just in time. She dutifully wiped, crumpling it up in a ball and stuffing it in her coat pocket. “It takes a lot to become a doctor, you know,” she told him.

“I would assume so,” he commented, not quite seeing where she was going and kind of hoping he’d be out of there before he did.

“The grants and scholarships took care of most of it, but we had to take out a few loans for books and dorms and transportation and stuff,” she continued.

This time he nodded confidently. Money stuff. He knew all about that.

She took it as a sign to go on, and did so. “We thought most of it was taken care of, but apparently there was a screw up and a grant was actually a loan and then the Government forgot to set up payments to the other companies while I’m over here and then there was this whole stock fiasco from trying to make some extra cash quickly and...”

“And?” he prompted.

“And now they’re people calling my father and demanding money that I have or will have shortly but can’t get to either way because there’s signatures and transfers and different galaxies and he’s getting calls daily and they’re threatening the house and...”

He cut her off with a wave of his hand. “Let me see what I can do,” he told her.

“I couldn’t...” she protested, stopping herself and biting her lip.

“I insist,” he said, placing what he hoped seemed like a reassuring hand on her shoulder, far above her possibly snot-encrusted cuff. “Think of it as repayment for all the times you’ve saved my life, or even Rodney’s and everyone else’s.”

“That’s part of the job,” she replied, offering him a hint of a grin.

He almost said, “Letting me sneak off on a rescue mission while critically wounded is not,” but instead decided on, “My brother knows people and has a few connections. Let me see if I can at least speed up the process, if not just pay it off and have him set up some sort of account for the rest.”

Her eyes lit up and the grin turned into a full-blown smile. “Oh my, I mean, I couldn’t but... oh, it would take care of so much and he could keep the barn and the house where mom is buried and...” She paused, collecting herself. “How can I ever thank you?”

He thought longingly of the Tylenol sitting on a shelf just above her head, but then decided this was worth something far more than painkillers. “I just want to see you happy, and with this out of the way, you can concentrate on healing us... and your new relationship with Ronon.”

She cocked her head to the side. “Ronon? How did you know? I mean, I’ve been torn between him and Rodney but hadn’t really decided and...”

“Oh, no, trust me, Ronon’s the one for you. We, uh, we can all see it, er, how much he cares about you and as a member of my team I want to see him happy too,” he stammered out, hoping she bought it. As an afterthought he added, “Besides, trust me on this, Rodney is not exactly the long-term, marrying type. Just ask Katie Brown.”

“Wow! Financial and love advice all in one night?” she giggled. “I guess that’s why they made you Colonel, all smart and in charge and everything.” She swung out in a mock punch and he resigned himself to needing to do laundry.

“Something like that,” he agreed. “Now remember, let me take care of the financial sutff and you take care of Ronon. That’s Ronon, not Rodney,” he stressed.

“Gotcha!” she told him with an emphatic nod. She followed that with a yawn. “Wow, guess I’m more tired than I thought. Must have been the stress of everything. I’m going to go hit the hay. Please let me know what you need to sort all this stuff out, and really, thank you again.”

She stood to leave, and he insisted, “My pleasure.” He waited until she was safely out of sight to pocket a few Tylenol and walk back to his room, planning all the way. He had a bit of work to do, but it would all be worth it... especially when Rodney came slinking back over the next few days. He wondered just how many times he’d make him admit the farce of a fling was a horrible mistake. With a shrug, he decided that number would be directly proportional to just how much of a mess Keller had made out of her accounts.

One thing was for certain, this was one bailout he was more than happy to approve of.

End.
