Day 10 of [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon.

Teyla Emmagan led her people, saved her people, save the strange new people, befriended the strange new people, saved them some more, and then helped save an entire galaxy for good measure. Because she could.

This is a mini-tribute to the tiny little "alien" woman who fought the Wraith, and won.

Apparently I have been nominated!

A Difference of Days - Team with a heavy bit of Teyla, written for the [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa exchange.

Five Times Rodney McKay Babysat the Athosians - Rodney-centric with a heavy bit of snark.

Gate Crashing 101 - SGC training with a focus on SG-1 and Daniel's their mishaps.

Thank you to anyone and everyone who liked the stories enough to think of them!

Check out all the stories nominated and (eventually) vote for your favorite at GateFic.com.

So, at work and so totally concentrating on my very few remaining follow ups, I went digging through some old folders on my computer that were happily brought along from my old one and stored in a file in a file in a file never to be seen again. One such file is marked Cat – Personal, so I look and find a crap ton of old stories I must have worked on here at one time. Some are from 2004 people.

So I did what any normal person would do and started clicking randomly to see what’s what. I found a couple I had already posted, but found a SG-1 story from January 2007, another from 2008, ten pages of a SGA kid fic from 2008, and some of my original notes from my K-series stuff from 2004 - including the names and such I went looking for two years ago, could not find, said screw it, and reinvented from scratch.

Things I have learned:
1) I should probably clean these things out more often.

2) I have a bad habit of writing pages upon pages of fic, and then moving on to something new (I’m looking at you, you 50 pages of “Days of Forever”).

3) I have worked for the same company for far too long.

4) They, like, totally don’t look at what’s on our personal drives in ancient folders, do they?

5) I may, possibly, have the attention span of a gnat today.

Sending the kid fic one home to possibly poke at while on the trip because it amuses: I downsized McKay, Sheppard, and Kavanaugh. Might send one of the SG-1 ones home as well because I have a crap-ton of notes on Anat for an Anat and Ba’al loose on Earth fic.

My geeky 12 year old is on a Stargate kick. He's been catching up on the last season(s) of SG-1, and watched Ark of Truth (which I have to admit we own, but I have never actually seen) tonight. After that? SGA. He watched The Rising parts 1 & 2, and it filled me with a bit of nostalgia. Or maybe that was just the brandy.

Remember when the Wraith were the big bad? When they were convinced that they were the ones to defeat the Ancients? Before they made them cheesy(er) and decided to make a new/old big bad of the original Replicators? And knock off a decent character or three along the way?

Makes me almost want to dig up my WIPs folder and maybe hammer out a few more words on the "Wraith loose on Earth and is that Walter?" one, or maybe the "Oops, we're all telepathically bonded" one. Can't even remember where I was going with the one where I turned Ronon into a kid.

So just how many open Word files *is* considered too many at this point? [eyes the four Merlin fics here plus the three at work warily]

So I was thinking – dangerous, I know – that maybe part of the reason I keep stalling out on the crossover is that it is told from the POV of the SGA characters and, quite frankly, I have not written anything SGA for quite some time. For lack of better phrasing, I’m out of practice. Re-reading what I’ve written so far, I think it’s close, but needs some tweaking.

So I was thinking – again, twice in one day even – that maybe I should try some sort of writing exercise to try to get back into the thought/feeling/flow of it all. Sort of an “ask for prompts and write small comment fic responses” type of thing. Anyone game?

Suggest a character or characters (preferably from Carter’s time in charge) and add a prompt or situation you would like to see them in. SGA only, please. I’ll respond with something somewhere between a drabble and a comment fic and hopefully get a better feel for the characters again.

Anyone interested? Or should I go to a corner and hide?

Art-like thing for the [livejournal.com profile] sg_prompts' prompt of, oddly enough, "chiaroscuro". Teyla-centric, with a hint of team.

I finally got a chance to sit down and read the story gifted to me from [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa tonight.

Bound to Heart, Bound to Home is an AU fic that sets the team in the time of the expansion to the prairies in the 1800's. There is drama and danger and a bit of angst and a whole lot of team. It is mostly team-y friendship, but could also be seen as leading to near OT4-ness as well. Be warned though, it is about 25,000 words and you will likely settle in for the long haul and read it to the end. :)

Now, an admission:
I've been feeling very separated from the SGA fandom as of late. Merlin fandom has been my pretty shiny to obsess over and swim in the seas of fic being created for it. A lot of SGA fic lately has seemed far too similar with the same aspects being brought up again and again and again. Kind of like there's a set of plot points and people pick and choose from them to make their stories and never really venture out to see if there's anything else they could add to it. While the stories may be good, it's like they aren't as good as they could be.

I don't mean to knock anyone with this as I noticed it in my own fic as well, which is why it was put on the back burner while I played with my new toys. Maybe it was the lack of new canon to play with, or maybe people just need a break for a while, I'm honestly not sure.

This story actually broke away from a lot of that. It's an AU, but it's still the team and still very much recognizable as the universe we're used to, only it's being looked at in a new way that made it all sorts of interesting to see. I would love if there were more fics like this, where they took the chance and tried something new even knowing there may not be the set audience of X number of people to respond or reply to it because the newness makes it interesting and oh so very worth it for the readers.

I honestly don't know if I will ever get back into SGA the way I was, but just reading something so well written in a fandom I at least once loved does make me want to try again. At the very least, it makes me want to take a look at what's on those back burners and think about what I could make of them again.

[/ramble]

PS: If anyone has recs of truly excellent SGA stories out there that do break the molds, I would love to hear them.

My [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa fic was posted today. Well, not the one I wrote as obviously even if it were I'd need to keep that anonymous and I'm rambling so I'll stop. The fic someone wrote for me for [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa was posted today. All 25K words.

Holy hell.

Um, I've got to try to find time to read this. My apologies to whoever the kind person is if I don't get to giving feedback immediately. I'm actively looking for a time when I can settle in and read.

Holy hell.

Or, maybe that should be "Holly"?

From the [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa posting:

Title: Bound to Heart, Bound to Home
Author: Santa
Recipient: [livejournal.com profile] cat_77
Pairing: Mostly gen; hints of OT4 and background Lorne/Weir
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: Historical AU; This is not dark, but it does not ignore issues of the early 1800s, such as war, land appropriation, and slavery.
Author's Notes: When I saw, "Team, maybe some OT4, please!" my brain did this funny thing and put them in the Northwest Territory right after the War of 1812. I did my best to stay true to history; Rodney's science is only half based in fact. Taking everyone out of the Pegasus Galaxy and fitting them into early American culture was a challenge, and I hope I did it justice.
I need to thank my wonderful beta for helping me through my hand-flapping and flailing and significantly decreasing the number of flaws in the story.
Summary: When Sheppard, McKay, Lorne, and Weir move to Illinois in 1815, they only expected the usual challenges of building a home and running a farm. Their household grows when they befriend Teyla and her people and adopt Ronon, on the run from his past. But it's a dangerous world, and only their quick wits, fast shooting, and Rodney's science can save the day.
Story length: Approx. 25,000 words [Holy hell.] [Eep.]

[livejournal.com profile] ileliberte chose one of my prompts over at [livejournal.com profile] team_sga's AU Fest!

By day, they are cut-throat investment brokers, by night, either vigilantes or just plain dorky drunks.

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] icarusancalion:
Post a single sentence from each WIP you have (or as many as you want to pick). No context, no explanations. No more than one sentence!

Because it's me, some are longer than a sentence...

1. He forced his eyes open, and as they adjusted to the dim light surrounding him, the voice repeated, “Can you hear me, my Dan-yel?”

2. Not bothering to wait for pleasantries and the chance of a dropped call, he rushed, “This is Doctor Daniel Jackson. I’m about two miles from the base and there’s been accident; there was an avalanche."

3. He could have made witty remarks about Jumpers and bombs and their history, but his heart wasn’t in it and his mind was miles away.

4. “Quantum Mirror?” Sheppard guessed a bit sheepishly, rubbing a hand through his already thoroughly mussed hair.

5. “Hey, I’ve learned a lot from the internet,” Rodney insisted. “You should see some of the stuff out there written about us. Oh, the things we could be doing if you were cuter and I was more flexible...”

6. “So all we have to do is track down a life-sucking space vampire on a planet full of Wraith Happy Meals and put him on a timeout?”

And I kept it down to only 6! Some are actively being worked on. Some, er, not-so-much...

Running away now...

Icons from Fringe, Stargate: SG-1, and Stargate: Atlantis. Most have been posted previously at my journal at various times, but I added three new ones for [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon.

Usual rules apply:

2. Please credit
3. Please let me know if you use any (I'm curious that way)

A guy apparently attacked Jason Momoa (the actor who plays Ronon Dex on SGA) in LA. The reports say his face was shattered with a pint glass of beer and needed to be rebuilt.

WTF?

That just... makes no sense.

On the long car ride back from Duluth, we stopped to get some gas and waters for us, and Youngest was going on about his game he was playing on his Gameboy. After a rather long, rambling explanation of levels and something I honestly don't remember, this was our conversation:

Me: To quote O'Neill in the first Atlantis ep, honey, "That was a waste of a perfectly good explanation."

Youngest: Why?

Me: Because I understand none of it and don't know the context.

Youngest: [huffs] If John was playing this game, he would never get past this level. I don't think he'd know how.

Eldest: If Sheppard was playing this game, he'd be going around shooting Pokemon.

Youngest: What if his gun ran out of power?

Eldest: He'd switch to his P-90.

My sons, they are fanboys.

I seem to have an obsession with bad fics today. Cracky, purposely poorly written prose that makes you want to spork your eyes. Maybe it’s a phase. Maybe it’s because work really and truly sucks today and I can’t concentrate worth crap. Maybe it’s just because it’s fun. I blame [livejournal.com profile] threnodyjones. Don’t ask why, I’m sure I’ll think of a reason eventually.

Anyway…

Five Bad Fics I’m Totally Not Writing [SGA Style]

1- Caldwell & Hermiod’s Cross-Galactic, Cross-Species Love Affair
It’s a tale as old as time: Two people from strikingly different backgrounds forced to work together in close quarters for weeks on end. Eventually, the dam has to break and their true desires are revealed.

2- The Bearing Fruit
A native fruit source is inadvertently exposed to an Ancient device, causing the most peculiar reaction: Everyone is pregnant. Everyone. The more fruit they ingest, the faster the gestation time. Unfortunately, it’s not even that easy. Not when a captured Wraith feeds on a father-to-be and finds out just what it’s like to be a Queen.

3- The Dance of Passion
Ronon has a secret, and it’s not just where he hides his knives.

4- Fast Hands, Faster Lips
Just how did Rodney afford all his degrees when the grants ran out? And why is everyone so interested in discovering firsthand just how well he multitasks?

5- Olive Branch
Sheppard inexplicably shows up on a populated planet weeks after being taken from by the Wraith and presumed dead. His memory of the events are foggy, but things start to become clearer when the Hive Queen returns roughly nine month’s later. Will he learn to love little Olive? Or will her Terrible Twos be too much for him (and the rapidly dwindling number of babysitters)?

There are a couple other kidfic stories floating around on my computer right now, but none were anywhere near complete enough to be posted in time for the current [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic challenge. This one came to me the other night though so, after a bit of editing, here it is. It's not kidfic in the traditional sense of the genre (the others are more the standard way), but I think it still fits the bill.

Title: Hunters
Length: ~ 820 words
Genre: Gen
Rating: PG
Spoilers/Season: Season 5 Search and Rescue (mild spoiler)
Synopsis: “Let me tell you of the Hunters...”

So, apparently it's okay to post a link to your fic over at [livejournal.com profile] sga_flashfic on your journal while the challenge is still going on, but you can't post the fic itself anywhere else until after the challenge. Yes, I'm slow.

Anyway...

Title: Home
Length: ~ 1850

Genre: Mostly Gen, with a tiny hint of femslash (Mehra/Vega)
Spoilers: 5.07 “Whispers”
Synopsis: They brought her home.
