Sy-Fy, y do you fayl so?

Spoilers for potential SGU stuff.

So I heard about the casting call for a thin attractive woman to play a quadriplegic who gets the chance to walk again. Thought, okay, whatever, been done before (even on Sister Kate in a dream sequence and yes, I did just date myself).

Then they add that she will experience intimacy for the first time. I rolled my eyes and figured the idiots in charge probably figured someone who’s disabled couldn’t possibly, you know, find other ways to get some. Added it to the pile of “they didn’t think” and moved on, hoping it would be a tiny bit of a larger episode.

Now there’s a new twist – the quadriplegic does this all with the dumbest plot device that ever did dumb bodyswap machine. Who does she swap with? The token dyke. Who does she screw? A man.

There are so many things that are wrong with this, beginning with consent issues and ending with the fact you know they will play it that the token dyke has now felt the love of a man and occasionally questions herself and her love for chicks over the love for dudes. Or, you know, the need for a strapping man instead of a strap on.

If I wasn’t at work, I’d find and link to the video of “I Spent My Last $10.00 on Birth Control and Beer” by Two Nice Girls...

Edit: This is supposedly the link - we can't access You Tube here to verify it though.

Edit: Here is afterellen.com's take on the situation, the recent apology, and whether the fail is still there and, if so, for which of the many different situations that have been raised.

In other news, sorry I fell behind on feedback and feedback responses. Long story short: Something came up in RL. I’ll try to catch up shortly.

Sing it with me!

I spent my last $10.00 on birth control, and beer

My life was so much simpler when I was sober, and queer

But the love of a strong hairy man done turn my head, I fear

And made me spend my last 10 bucks on birth control, and beer...

*cackles*

What's sad is it's not that hard to have a gay or disabled character. In the recent tv movie/failed pilot "Virtuality (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1219836/)" two of the astronauts on the 10 year mission were gay (out of the 10 or so people there were also 2 married m/f couples) and it was just there- no big deal- two guys shown holding hands, etc occasionally. And then there is paraplegic actor Mitch Longley who successfully starred on two soaps, even having a long, serious discussion with his girlfriend on one about what he could and would not be able to do in bed. (If you ever watched "Las Vegas" he was the guy who worked in security- the show realized after 2/3 years that while he was always seen seated, it'd never been shown he was actually in a wheelchair so they had an episode about it)

It CAN be done right, why is it done wrong so often?

erm... long rant is long. Sorry
