Played around with GIMP this morning and attempted to make a new Merlin icon. Had to shrink it to 90x90 due to the size constraints (was 3K too big for LJ *pout*) but I rather like the end result.
Yep, GIMP can make animations, but they tend to lose quality *really* fast (like my old OT4 icon - all grainy and such).
You stack the images in layers, but don't anchor them or they become just one image. Also, don't choose the "animate" option from the special features unless you've got like frame by frame and a ton of room - the thing cycles through them so fast that if you are not epileptic, you will be soon (I'm allowed to make that joke as E has epilepsy *g*). Choose to save it as a .gif and it will give you options of B&W or color and frame drop and speed and such. It's trial and error, but you can get some nifty results. You can also get some that make you question just what was in those brownies though. *g*
