Ficlet? - Merlin - Quaint Customs
So driving in today (sans music, still, so my mind did a wander), a thought came to mind. Someone mentioned how in “But Only Say the Word and I Shall” that they liked Lance and Will as a couple, which was odd because they never met in the canon timeline.
As with many things in fandom, I took this as a challenge. *g*
This is my view on how it so totally could have happened:
So it turns out Lancelot has a totally sucky sense of direction. This is how he eventually ends up as one of the worst mercenaries ever to mercenary and also so totally needs one of those bright red Camelot capes to know who to follow and where to go.
On his way to try to find Camelot (which took far longer than expected, yet shorter than the longest bet his village placed, and yes, his uncle was disappointed with the loss), he happened upon Ealdor. Hunith, of course, took him in as she was still missing Merlin. Due to this, he accidentally crossed Will’s path when Will saw him at the house and thought Merlin had returned. People frowned upon Hunith being alone with an unknown man so readily, so he stayed with Will instead.
Will called him a total poseur and mocked him and teased him and then maybe admitted he was harsh over the fourth mug of ale because he was still bitter that his BFF Merlin left for the place and he was stuck slopping pigs. Lancelot tried to console him, ended up totally jumping him (amongst other things), and it made for a totally awkward morning after when Will called out Merlin’s name by mistake.
Hunith took pity on both boys and gave Lancelot detailed instructions on how to get to Camelot and then drew him a map and then showed him how to read said map and then pushed him out her door and on his way, silently taking bets on how long it would take him to reach the castle. (Also, Lancelot now thought it was a quaint, yet enjoyable, Ealdor custom to sleep with visitors so he was fine with sharing a bed with Merlin though Merlin was a bit surprised just how much else he shared. Merlin did not complain. Lancelot wisely did not complain when yet another name was called out because a) it could be that customs thing again, and b) Arthur was kind of hot.)
So, see? It’s perfectly reasonable that the two got together in canon.
