Merlin took a deep breath to try to calm the thoughts that ran rampant in his head. He stood in line patiently, well, patiently for him, and awaited his turn. When he finally stepped forward, he noted the look of surprise on Arthur’s face, though the king kept his carefully bland. This is likely not what Arthur had expected him to be doing on his day off, but it was most definitely a task that needed to be done.

“Speak,” Uther ordered, looking bored already.

Merlin wet his lips and hoped he did not seem like he was stalling before he finally managed, in as calm and meek of a voice as possible, to form the words he needed to say. “I come to seek sanctuary, sire.”

Uther narrowed his eyes. “Are you daft?” he demanded. “You work for the prince. You already have sanctuary in this castle. Be gone with you before you waste any more of my time.”

“Not for me,” Merlin blurted, knowing this was likely his only chance. He saw he had the attention of the court once more and clarified, “I request sanctuary for my mother.”

Arthur’s eyes widened slightly and Merlin knew he had already caught on as he mouthed Hunith’s name. Uther though, requested, “Elaborate.”

Merlin kept his head low in deference and explained, “My mother is of Ealdor, which is at the border to Cenred’s kingdom. He has ignored the village thus far, but there is rumour that he knows one from Ealdor now serves Camelot.” He chanced a look up and swore he saw the tiniest softening about the king’s eyes. “Please, sire. She is my mother and all I have left in this world. If Cenred takes out his anger for my servitude on her, I don’t know what I would do.”

There was a long pause before Uther sighed, “So you request another mouth to feed when we are already low on supplies from Cenred’s previous attack?”

“I’ll feed her,” Merlin insisted. “I will take care of her with my own wages. Gwen, er, Guinevere, has stated she can live with her in her father’s house as she has the bed to spare and would welcome the company.” He paused again, but could not tell if Uther’s resolve was weakening or not. “Please, sire, I beg of you,” he pleaded. “She’s my mother.”

Uther’s lips tightened slightly before he gave a stiff nod. “Very well,” he relented. “I suppose you request several days’ leave to bring her here as well?”

“I can do without him for the three days it will take him,” Arthur offered. He looked squarely at Merlin, a bit of a forced smirk on his face as he added, “I wish to hunt anyway and the knights would relish a chance to actually catch something without his bumbling in the way of things.”

Uther looked as doubtful as Merlin felt at that, but simply replied, “See to it then,” and gestured for Merlin to move on.

As Merlin thanked the king for his leniency and quickly left his presence before he could change his mind, he almost missed Uther turning to Arthur to ask, “And I suppose it will just be a coincidence that his wages are due to be raised and that the most fertile hunting grounds lie upon that border this time of year?”

He did however, catch Arthur’s reply of, “Of course, father. Nothing more.”

The heavy doors closed behind him and he sagged against the cool stone of the wall with relief. Now all he had to do was convince his mother.

this is a really nice moment. and quite a good point--what is going on with hunith and ealdor now that cendred's our big baddie?

i like the subtle merlin/arthur interactions filtered through merlin's interactions with uther.

nice job!

i have to admit that in the first few lines, i had this moment of thinking that merlin was going to seek sanctuary from arthur's well-aimed pots and cups and things that he keeps hurling at him.

Oh, that's so sweet! And really, absolutely spot-on, both character-wise as well as plot-wise. I mean, Merlin's mother DOES now officially live in an enemy kingdom. I love it when the baddies take a note of Merlin and his origins =)! Great job!

Oh man, this SO needed to happen in the show. It's obvious! There's no way Merlin's presence as Arthur's manservant has gone completely unnoticed, especially since everyone in Ealdor has known about it for two years or more.

Once again with the brilliant missing scenes, Cat.

They could say it's two different kings, but I do have to wonder if they originally had a purpose to making them the same one, then forgot about it. They often seem to set up things that they don't end up using later, like the romances in the first three episodes or Mordred's desire to spork Merlin.

If they ever fight chibi-style, I'm totally having that be his weapon of choice!
