Arthur’s reign begins in a flurry of destruction, violence, and blood. The smoke still hangs heavy in the sky when a lone figure approaches.
Merlin turns to him, crimson staining skin that is far too pale and gaunt, eyes still glowing with the golden fire he bears within. “I did this for you,” he whispers. “It’s safe now.”
Arthur catches the fragile body, lowers him gently to the mud strewn earth before Merlin can collapse under the weight of what he has done. As he looks out across the devastation, he has to wonder if it was worth the price.
