Mer always kept her tampons on the shelf next to the toilet. She said time and time again that she was a woman and it wasn’t going to change overnight, so to get the fuck over it already. When they were exiled to Earth the box was pink, otherwise, it was always the plain white box straight from the infirmary supply rack. Every month like clockwork, it would appear on the twelfth and disappear on the seventeenth.

Jill noticed when it was missing on the thirteenth. She noticed when it was still missing on the fifteenth.

She was not certain how to broach the subject, things still being a bit on edge since Mer’s rescue from the Genii stronghold. Hell, she didn’t know how to broach any subject at this point. Things were still too raw, too fresh in her mind.

Unbidden, the memories assaulted her: Meredith cowering in the cell, filthy and shaking, her clothing in tatters. Two weeks later and McKay still spoke only of the project Koyla and his goons had her working on, nothing about any of the time not spent surrounded by nuclear gadgets and wannabe technology.

Jill’s hand curled into a fist, resisting the urge to hit the sparkling mirror Mer never even glanced at anymore, settling for pounding it against the near carbonite counter instead. The pain made her focus on the here and now, on what was known versus what might have happened to a single captive woman surrounded by a squadron of men.

Beckett would not confirm or deny anything, and it pained Sheppard to go behind Mer’s back to ask. It was pointless anyway. Cait would just shake her head, open and close her mouth a few times as if tempted to tell her, and eventually fall back into stoic “Doctor/Patient Confidentiality” mode. She knew something. Jill was sure of it. Aside from being the primary physician to treat Mer, Cait was suddenly even more clingy and protective than usual.

The door to the main room opened and McKay stepped through. Her long curls hung in her face in a poor attempt to hide the dark circles under her eyes. She needn’t have bothered; Jill had spent the last few nights valiantly faking slumber as well, waiting until Mer finally drifted off to finally look over to her and silently ask all the questions that had been haunting her mind since the moment Mer had been dragged away.

She realized she was still standing frozen in the doorway to the bathroom, hand extended as if reaching for something that wasn’t there. Something that was held within Mer’s shaking hands.

McKay must have noticed it at the same time she did, heaving a sigh and shuffling over to the bed. She sat heavily at the end, leaving enough room for Jill to join her if she dared, but not quite voicing the offer. Finally, after an eternity, she looked up at her lover. “So, I guess we need to talk, huh?”

Thank you very much! There's more in the Jill and Mer universe, but I'm not sure about this story specifically. I'm thinking of referencing it and having them take on Koyla again, but don't know if I'd do justice to such an emotional subject.
