Stargate Universe

So I was trying to avoid anything and everything to do with this thing due to the whole canceling of SGA for SG-90210. However, I found out that a certain actor was going to be on it, and had to look into it a bit more because, I must admit, said actor was totally teenage crush material when I was younger.

I'll list the name beneath the cut for those avoiding even that much, but have to say I have a bad feeling given said actor's current involvement in other projects.

Spoilers Below

Lou Diamond Phillips is supposedly cast as the officer in charge of the ship. However, I remember reading way back when that the "older" officer is injured/killed/left on Earth/some such thing early on, leaving the "kids" to fend for themselves.

Give that LDP is currently doing a charity golf tournament, and has signed up for "I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here" for another charity...

So I figure there's a couple of options: A) He's on break/hiatus when he's doing the charity work, B) The scripting and such for SGU has changed drastically since the initial releases, C) He's reoccurring at the SGC, trying to contact the ship and such, D) He's done his bit and is done.

And yes, this dyke is completely ignoring the casting of Ming Na as a lesbian until such time it is proven that TPTB don't turn the poor thing into a huge stereotype with absolutely no personality of character depth of her own.

Edit: The actor in question just Twittered something that kind of supports one of the theories:

LouDPhillips Leaving for Costa Rica in a week. Won't be back in Vancouver for Stargate until August or later, I think maybe the last couple of episodes.

Thoughts?

The breaking down of the sets hurts my heart. Remember when they said they were leaving the gate and the gate room for tourists/memorials? Yeah, that lasted a whopping 6 months.

Re: Ming Na - the spoilers I read are... not heartening. Remember the annoying plot device that changes as needed that got blowed up in the kawhoosh to save Daniel and Vala? Yeah, that's how the supposedly stranded team stays in regular contact with Earth. An early ep has people visiting their loved ones as "friends" to tell them they will be away for a while, and that's when the big reveal about the gayness happens.

Again, I really don't think TPTB can be trusted to make the gayness issues anything more than a cliche. I want to watch to see how they handle it, but at the same time wonder if there is enough alcohol to ease the pain after the fact.

If they're breaking sets to put up new ones, they must really be investing everything but the kitchen sink in this show. Too bad they're still crappy writers who wouldn't recognize an interesting plot if it bit them on the collective ass.

I hadn't heard that stupid communication device was how they were going to "reconnect" with earth. Lame. But the Boyz at Bridge do so love to homage themselves.

It's sounding like the gay factor won't be a real factor at all, other than knowing she's a lesbian. Just a tease then it will probably be forgotten. At least that's an improvement from their last attempt by saying after-the-fact that a soldier that had been killed was a lesbian, with absolutely nothing in canon.

I'm thinking alcohol with a chocolate chaser may at least ease the pain. Though only brain bleach is a sure cure.

We can hope the Gay Factor isn't really a factor at all, but I'm willing to put down a square or two of Dove dark chocolate that says at least one character (probably the "unruly Marine") makes a comment about it being hawt and there being at least one implication that the lesbian character finds any and all women attractive, but restrains herself with her teammates ('cuz you know we can't control ourselves, much like teenaged boys).

Re: alcohol + chocolate - have you tried Cask & Cream's Chocolate version? It's like a chocolatini right out of the bottle, no mixing with others required. 'Tis nummy indeed.
