Doctor Who Spoiler

Apparently they have announced who will be playing the new companion to the new Doctor. Article is one giant spoiler, naturally. Won't say who it is here other than to say it really looks like they are gunning for a younger audience. Then again, that's the way Old School Doctor Who was, so, is it really a change?

Except old school managed it with Doctors and companions that were a LOT older. (Doctor's especially)

True, but people (ie TPTB) don't quite think that way anymore, unfortunately. They figure young viewers need young eye candy. My guess is there is going to be a similarity or three with the set up for the Sarah Jane Adventures.

very true. It's funny, soap operas are famous for focusing on the teens over the summer because that's when the younger fans are home, but whenever anyone's done polls the younger fans tend to favor the older, established characters instead of the teens.

eye candy is well and good, but give me someone who can ACT and give them a plot and dialogue they can sink their teeth into and I don't care if they look like the hunchback of notra dame, I'll be happy

There's a chance they might surprise everyone and actually be good and act well and have real chemistry and such. That said, my hopes are not that high. To quote a coworker from earlier today, "Yeah, and I'm Tim Curry!" (to which [livejournal.com profile] johnnym77 then started singing Rocky Horror songs via email to him...)

I tend to set my expectations low, that way I'm happily surprised when it doesn't suck.

If it doesn't suck.

Doctor Who+time warp.... hmmmmm

I've been watching a soap again after not having watched any in years, and you're absolutely right.

From when I was a pre-teen watching with my mother and grandmothers, to a 20-something, to just about double 20-something, it's always been the older, established characters who've interested me the most.

That and teens on soaps never acted like teens. They're generally written as brattier versions of the adults and I'd rather see a more experienced actor act as an adult character.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-05-30 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
And it didn't help when you started thinking that the teen was only 8 two years ago and you remember them being born only 3 years before that....

Heh. Yeah, there is that problem.

The show I'm watching now is new to me, so I don't always get the history until other fans explain it, but every so often I catch one of my old shows. And then promptly get weirded out by an older character (often played by the same actor as 20+ years ago) dating a character who wasn't even born when I previously watched.

Yet they're shown as being only a few years age difference. There must be some strange time anomolies going on in Soap Opera Land. ;)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-05-30 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
or when Mom and Daughter look almost the same age (and date the same guy...)

[identity profile] cat-77.livejournal.com 2009-05-30 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Don't forget twins that are suddenly only children only to find out they have a twin again when they need a life-saving blood transfusion or some such thing (usually when they are twenty, so about 2-3 years after they were five).

Always confused how a single day could take a week, yet the kids aged years in a matter of moments.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-05-30 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
and the seven children no one knew they had coming out of the woodwork, and the half sibling you didn't know about that you almost marries....

ahhh soap operas. Where canon rewrites itself daily. Gotta love them.

[identity profile] cat-77.livejournal.com 2009-05-30 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Soap Opera... Canon... Nope, does not compute. :)

Unfortunately used to watch Days. Stopped around the time the re-cast Ronon suddenly remembered he was John so the original actor could return, never mind he knew all sort of secrets only Ronon would know and was recognized by his wife and kids for how many years? That, incidentally, was around the time of a demonic possession (pre-the series that actually has demons) and a mob boss keeping Marlena in a gilded cage. It was just too much.

They have to know it's crap scripts and crap acting, yet it's a steady paycheck with millions of followers, so you can't really blame them. (Plus, it gave us people like Buffy and Dean, so...)

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-05-30 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Roman Brady. (Not Ronon *hee* SGA bleeding through for you there) I watched Days on and off for decades. Gave up completely maybe 5 years ago when one night lasted from january until mid april and contained 5 murders.

I watch others on and off still. Depending on the plots and eye candy and whatnot

[identity profile] cat-77.livejournal.com 2009-05-30 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
So totally counts for getting somewhere roughly close. *g*

I remember one summer where Carly (?) was buried alive by Vivian (?) and as soon as it was revealed the "coffin" had air and water, my mother was like, "You know this is going to go on all summer." She was right, down to the day almost.

[identity profile] donutsweeper.livejournal.com 2009-05-30 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
I sort of remember that story. Soaps. Gotta love them for their *interesting* storylines

Jinx! I just posted about this too. ;)

The Old School show was considered a kid's show (that some of the family could watch too), but that didn't mean the actors were kids.

Today's show is aiming to be "young and hip" but they seem to be forgetting the Old School fans are, well, older. They do a lot of homages to the old show, but can't the actors be a little older too? At this rate, Twelve will be a pimple-faced teenager.

I'm not thrilled with the casting. They're gonna get ship all over the TARDIS again, aren't they? They just got the smell out after a full season sans ship.

[identity profile] cat-77.livejournal.com 2009-05-30 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
Re: Young and Hip - it's like they completely forget the whole "give them something to look up to" thing.

As for the casting, I'm betting they went with a younger companion due to the new Doctor being so young. They go with a companion older than him, it undermines his experience, at least in appearance.

Fear the ship. There's probably at least one fic being written as I type this. Who cares about characterization when you can twu luv? Sure the Doctor is actually far older in reality, but he doesn't look it so it *so* doesn't count. *rolls eyes*

I always fear the ship. I've seen it ruin way too many characters and/or shows.

They may shock me and not go The Way of the Ship, but I'll only believe it when I don't see it.

I understand their probable reason for keeping the companion young since the Doctor appears young, but it makes me wonder how this very issue will be handled within the show.

Will a 40-something character question a 20-ish man's advice on how to save life, the universe and everything due to his apparent age?

The Doctor has often been ignored simply because he knows too much or because it doesn't fit with what everyone else thinks they know, but will they use his apparent age as another reason to ignore his words?

[identity profile] cat-77.livejournal.com 2009-05-30 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
I think it could go one of two ways - UNIT now knows well enough about him to trust his word, no matter what he looks like, or the whole "youthful appearance" thing will be hammered home until you want to choke a bitch.

[personal profile] nialla 2009-05-30 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm going for Option C, which is once UNIT figures out it's really the Doctor they'll trust him as usual, but with everyone else they'll hammer it until you're ready to choke a bitch.
