Nature's Way

Daniel smiled as he sipped his coffee, settling into the comfortable chair on Jack's porch.  He looked over at the bird feeder, watching the little sparrows and chickadees dart to and fro, gathering the discards from the ground as well as the good stuff from the feeder itself.  Jack had insisted on always having one, wherever he lived.  He had mentioned something about not always being able to be out in nature, so bringing a bit of nature to him instead.

Jack himself was still inside, hacking away at a creation he was determined to call lunch.  Daniel had come out here to enjoy the scenery and noticed the feeder was empty.  Knowing they planned to eat on the porch once Jack was done demolishing the food, he thought it only fair for him to refill it.  So now he sat and relaxed and sipped and watched.  He watched as the large hawk swooped down and grabbed one of the sparrows, ripping it in two before landing on the neighbor's roof to settle in with its snack.  He was still watching as the ravens flew in to pick up the pieces and were nearly pecked to death by the chickadees defending their feeder.

His jaw was still hanging open, coffee in his mug long forgotten but thankfully not spilled, when Jack set his creation down on the table next to him.  He could get no words out, settling on pointing numbly towards where the hawk was finishing swallowing something with feathers still hanging off its beak.

"Huh?" Jack asked before following the shaking hand to the sight before them.  "Oh, I see you fed the birds, thanks!"

"Ja-Jack?" Daniel managed to get out.

"What?" Jack asked, honestly not knowing what was troubling the other man.  Daniel watched as the pieces seemed to click together, the older man's eyes darting between the hawk, the ravens, and the sparrows returning to their roost.  "It's nature's way," he shrugged, sitting down in the chair on the other side of the table.  Dividing out his creation, he held the plate out to his friend.  "Roast beef?" he offered.

End.
