“But, she’s just a little girl!” John protested, watching the gathered villagers bow down low before the child. She was no more than eight, and dressed in the finest the town had to offer, golden robes draping delicately on the coarse wooden floor.
Teyla tried the diplomatic approach and asked, “How was she determined to be holy born?”
The village elder eagerly replied, “She was God-Chosen. The Oracle of the Ancients decreed it!”
Sheppard looked at the Oracle, not surprised to find it looked a lot like some of the tech back on Atlantis. “You mean, like this?” he asked, picking up the small devise and watching as it obediently lit for him.
“You are God-Chosen as well!” the elder gasped. His exclamations drew the attention of some of the crowd who, seeing their Oracle light in the hands of an off-worlder, alternately murmured their astonishment and bowed before him.
“Oh, like he needed the ego boost!” Rodney protested.
“Better him than you,” Ronon mused.
John carefully set the Oracle back on its pedestal, silently willing it to turn off. He looked across to the young girl, mirroring her smile and wink. It was going to be a long day.
