Merlin 2x13
Time to admit that I have not had a chance to watch the damn thing until now. Sad, yes, but RL and work and everything else stood in the way.
I've got some questions, and some commentary, and probably some plot bunnies for fics. Needless to say, here there be spoilers.
- First and foremost, the whole "Arthur is deaf like a deaf, deaf thing" thing is getting old. Trained warrior, hunter, etc, who supposedly notices little details and sounds, not noticing Merlin shouting in the courtyard he just left or the huge ass dragon responding and calling him a warlock or Merlin and Balinor talking in regular conversational tones about being father and son in front of him? Fail.
- What is Gwen doing without Morgana? It looks like she's helping Gaius, possibly doing Merlin's job so Merlin can concentrate on Arthurpossibly in more ways than one. That would actually work if they carry it through to next season.
- Anyone else think Uther's look when Gaius admitted one of the dragonlords might still be alive was more like, "Seriously? What else are you keeping from me?"
- Sir Leon. I have this theory or, possibly, just a mini-plot bunny. So, Arthur and Merlin come back to the castle, get their hugs and all that, but round up thepansies knights who stayed behind for burial duty. They go out, dig through the toasty critters of horsies and tin men, and find Leon buried at the bottom. He's kinda squished, kinda medium rare, and kinda concussed (knocked out to stop from hearing Merlin, of course). They take him back, patch him up, and he lives to be awesome another day. Yes/No?
- Arthur. I would love for him to have some downtime where he sits and thinks for a moment. It could happen, really it could. Possibly about defying his father and being willing to do so, but then segueing into thinking about how Merlin followed him despite the risks. Then, thinking about how Merlin claims to have saved his sorry arse so many times already. Then thinking about how many times he's either had his back turned or been knocked unconscious when something major happens. Then thinking about the weird dream he had that night by the fire (no, not that one, the other one) where Balinor called Merlin "son" and Merlin called Balinor "father" and how unarmed, unprotected Merlin stood at his side against the dragon and was convinced he would survive. Then he thinks of how Morgana's dreams sometimes told her things. Then he sneaks some texts from Geoffrey about dragonlords and how it's passed from father to son. Then he figures Merlin is Balinor's son and, assuming his father is correct, dragonlords have some magic, which means Merlin might have some magic, which means maybe the comments and such were true and Merlin really has been helping to save his arse all along. Of course, being Arthur, he probably thinks Merlin is incompetent with it and solely uses it as a distraction so Arthur himself can save the day, but, you know.
- Finally, what the fuck was up with Arthur not giving Merlin any sort of protection or, you know, armour, when Merlin insists on coming with? Boy has chainmail that fits him, make him wear it. They were, after all, in the damn Armoury at the time. Sorry, that part bugged.
Er, I think that's it. Thoughts?

Also, your theory about Sit Leon is totally canon! :(
Arthur not giving Merlin anything to defend himself with was weird. It's like he was thinking "we're all going to die anyway, so why bother", but then there'd be the question of why anyone else *was* wearing armour.

Leon so totally lives. *nods* Arthur needs at least one knight who is not some random redshirt blindly following orders.
The armour thing had to have been an oversight; it just does not make sense. Yeah, they want to stress Merlin has other ways of protecting himself and they want to show the whole warrior vs not-so-much thing, but it really stood out to me.
