“This is so much better than egg nog,” Sam sighed, leaning up against Daniel where he slouched on the floor.
He nodded, but seemed transfixed by the lights on the tree at the movement. He reached out a hand to grab them, frowning when they floated away.
“Usually I save this for once, maybe twice a year,” he confided, taking another draw from the quickly diminishing bud. There had been an old newspaper clipping from New York and a hand-drawn sketch of his wife in the shoebox with the unrolled papers and box of matches, answering just when those times were.
“Why the special occasion?” Carter inquired, debating whether or not she was coordinated enough to use a lighter at this point. She thought it best not to try, so she took a hit off his instead.
“You needed it,” he shrugged, but she caught the careful way he was still watching her.
She looked down at the framed photo from the year before, Janet smiling mischievously from under the mistletoe with a Santa hat dangling dangerously from its perch on the top of her head. A single tear trickled down her cheek as she admitted, “Yeah, I really did.”
