Tonight's Episodes

Okay, just finished watching tonights episodes on Sci-Fi.  "Talion" for SG-1 and "Sunday" for Atlantis.  Also known as "Two Episodes My Boys Will Not Watch Until They Are Older."

Here's my quick thoughts and reasoning:
"Talion"
Teal'c gets his revenge on.  I actually liked seeing the darker side of a former First Prime.  It was just a bit too violent for an 8 and 9 year old to see, not to mention I don't know how they would handle seeing children blown up and one of their favorite characters both go apeshit and have the shit beat out of him.

Some of the things I liked:
- Daniel's reaction to finding Bra'tac and then later, when he sits at his bedside - he's a member of the SG-1 extended family.
- The panicked reaction of Sam and Mitchell at finding Teal'c injured.
- The entire team glaring at Evil Jaffa.
- Sam having a complete bitchface at Evil Jaffa (or, as my partner said, her "I cut you" face).
- Daniel cheerfully telling Evil Jaffa that he believes he speaks for Bra'tac when he says, "I'd like to poke out your eye with a very big knife" or something to that effect.  The fact he smiles at the end and Sam and Vala give him nods of support really makes the moment.
- Daniel and Vala strategizing.
- Mitchell being able to sneak up on Teal'c and actually holding his own in a fight for more than 10 seconds.  He trained with the Sodan, so one would hope he would not be a complete pansy.  Nice call back to that and, dare I say, continuity.
- The team covering for Teal'c, even though he knocked them out, and Landry going along with it even though he clearly knows it's a lie.

Things I did not like:
- Could see way too much of the stunt doubles in the staff fight (and there are times that Evil Jaffa's staff clearly bends as if made of rubber).
- Teal'c's amazing disappearing injuries.  Yeah, there was a bit of recovery time from the first attack and he heals quickly.  That does not explain why the staff blast on his arm that took him down and allowed him to be taken to Evil Jaffa in the first place just disappears back on base.

"Sunday"
I knew a bit of the storyline in advance going into this one and knew of the massive explosions and major injuries to major characters.  I thought seeing one of the main cast blow up might be too much for my boys.  That, and the 9 year old has a mini-crush on Teyla, so seeing her blown up/seriously injured may have been too much for him.

Things I liked:
- Nice look at some of the personalities and personal lives of the people on Atlantis.
- Um, I'm sure there was something more...  The team mourning?

Things I did not like:
- They killed off a major character with a fucking exploding tumor.
- The forced "here's some red shirts that we are going to pretend are friends with the team but then we are going to kill off so it's personal, but not too personal".
- The forced "They are het!  Really they are!  See, they talk about the opposite sex and were married or want to be and really, they are straight!"  Dude, you can't het up Atlantis, so don't even try.
- I'm not a huge fan of jumping around the timeline so much (like things a tad more linear) and really not a fan of reshowing bits from only a few minutes before to stress their importance.
- You knew Carson was going to get it when they kept showing all of his friends refusing to go fishing with him - way to build the forced guilt and angst.  We already know they like him and care about him - we have almost three years of backstory showing he is their friend.
- Did I mention the fucking exploding tumor?

Randomness:
- My partner and I keep comparing the last scene with Carson and Rodney to the last scene of the last episode of Xena.  A major character talking to their recently deceased friend while they overlook the rolling sea until the recently deceased friend tells the other character that everything is going to be fine and slowly fades away.  She wanted to know where the little black pot was.  I told her that, with Rodney, it would most likely be a little Dalek replica.

Also, if anyone knows where there are screen grabs from either episode, it would be much appreciated if you would share this knowledge.  :)

Popping in from tagging for [livejournal.com profile] sg1_debrief. I found caps for both episodes at Stargate Caps (http://www.stargatecaps.com) last night. Hope that helps.

Kind of related, but I totally thought of you when I was shopping yesterday. Suncoast had a rack of Stargate action figures, including 2 separate designs for Vala. A shame neither one of them really looks like Claudia Black.

Thank you! My partner really wants me try try to make an icon of Sam's "I cut you" face, among some others I was going to try.

Thanks again!

Heh. I was going to hit the Source this weeked to catch up on my two comics I've been hooked on. Last time I was there they finally got some Stargate stuff in. Previously, they had nothing and when I asked, the owner looked like I was nuts until a crowd of geek boys surrounded me and said, "Yeah! Where is it?" Suddenly they started selling it again. Go fig.

BTW, way to rub in you had the day off... ;)
