“Is this what it’s like?” he wondered in hushed contemplation. “Is this silence normal to, well, normal people?”
The silence, the stillness, the absence of the white noise that had faded to the background but was always there, always niggling at the back of his mind, was the hardest to adjust to. It was nothing he could put words to, ironically enough. It was just gone.
He figured that pretty much summed everything up at this point. Atlantis was gone. The not so quiet presence in his mind was gone. The one place he never meant to be but belonged to so thoroughly was gone.
He looked to the side and saw understanding in those blue eyes. The gene was supposed to give them access to technology, open doors to new worlds. They were never told what happened when you close those doors.
“I snuck back a couple of life signs detectors in my pack, want one?” Rodney whispered, afraid to break the quiet only they heard. “It doesn’t stop it completely, but it helps.”
John nodded. He understood. “We’re going back,” he said. It was not a question.
“Even if I have to build a ship myself,” Rodney vowed.
